Can You Take Human Ashes on Wizz Air? Guide from Our Experience

While this guuide is primarily aimed at UK and Irish passengers flying outbound with human ashes, the same guidelines generally apply to all Wizz Air flights, regardless of departure or arrival location.

Traveling can be stressful at the best of times, but traveling with a loved one’s ashes adds an emotional layer that most guides and advice columns don’t cover. We discovered that Wizz Air does allow passengers to travel with human ashes, and after fielding questions from numerous concerned travelers, we decided to create this guide to help you navigate this sensitive process.

Preparing Ashes for Wizz Air Travel

Firstly, it’s important to be aware that Wizz Air may opt to store your carry-on baggage in the overhead bin. If you’re travelling with ashes, this information is vital. We highly advise selecting a durable urn, preferably made from materials like metal or hard plastic, which can withstand the rigours of travel. Adding an extra protective layer, like bubble wrap or a padded bag around the urn, can help minimise the risk of damage.

Alternatively, we suggest using a scatter tube or another non-metallic container. Please note: It’s crucial that any container carrying the ashes must be easily visible on X-ray scans.

How heavy is My URN?
When traveling via Wizz Air with cremated remains, you'll need to consider the total weight of both the ashes and the urn. Ashes usually weigh between 1.8kg and 4kg, and the urn can add an additional 1kg to 3kg. Therefore, the combined weight can range from a minimum of 2.8kg to a maximum of 7kg, averaging around 4.9kg. Alternatively, a scatter tube, which weighs only 0.35kg, could be a convenient option.
What size is my URN?
As for the dimensions of the urn, they typically range from 10 to 12 inches in height (25 to 30 cm) and 6 to 8 inches in diameter (15 to 20 cm). However, for the most precise dimensions, it's advisable to either measure the urn yourself, refer to the purchase specifications, or consult the crematorium if you acquired the urn from them.
