Can You Take Human Ashes on a TUI Flight? Our Experience Calling Them

While this guuide is primarily aimed at UK and Irish passengers flying outbound with human ashes, the same guidelines generally apply to all TUI flights, regardless of departure or arrival location.

Based on our personal experience of transporting human ashes on a TUI flight, it’s vital to be familiar with the airline’s specific rules and guidelines. We have directly engaged with TUI to understand their policies, and here’s what we’ve learned.

Can You Take Ashes on a Plane with TUI?

Yes, you can take human ashes on a TUI flight, but there are several guidelines that must be followed to ensure a smooth travel experience. Here’s a breakdown of TUI’s rules and regulations regarding the matter:

  • Separate Item: Ashes can be taken as a separate item alongside your carry-on luggage.
  • Suitable Container: The ashes must be transported in a non-metallic container made of materials like ceramic, glass, marble, plastic, or wood. So it passes through the X-ray machine.
  • On Your Lap: Though TUI has not restricted the size and weight of the urn, we recommend using a container that is light and easily portable since you’ll need to carry it on your lap during the flight.
  • Documentation: A copy of the death certificate and cremation certificate must be shown at check-in and customs.
  • Pre-Travel Notice: You must contact TUI before your journey to inform them that you’ll be travelling with ashes.

Failure to comply with these rules may result in TUI refusing to let you fly with the ashes.

TUI Baggage Allowance When Carrying Ashes

If you opt to place the urn within your hand luggage rather than carrying it as a separate item, be mindful of TUI’s size and weight limitations. The airline permits hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg with dimensions not exceeding 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

Destinations You Can Fly to With Ashes on TUI

TUI permits flying with ashes to any destination they serve. However, different countries have their own policies concerning the transport of human ashes. To be on the safe side, it’s best to reach out to the embassy of your destination country to understand their specific requirements.

How heavy is My URN?
When flying with TUI and carrying cremated remains, it's important to factor in the total weight of the ashes along with the urn. Generally speaking, ashes weigh between 1.8kg and 4kg, and the urn can add another 1kg to 3kg. This results in a combined weight ranging from a minimum of 2.8kg to a maximum of 7kg, with an average of around 4.9kg. If you're interested in a lighter option, a scatter tube is worth considering, as it weighs a mere 0.35kg.
What size is my URN?
Concerning the dimensions of the urn, they typically measure between 10 and 12 inches in height (25 to 30 cm) and have a diameter of 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm). For the most precise dimensions, it's advisable to measure the urn yourself, consult the specifications from the vendor, or get in touch with the crematorium if the urn was purchased there.
