Can You Take Human Ashes on Lufthansa?

While this guuide is primarily aimed at UK and Irish passengers flying outbound with human ashes, the same guidelines generally apply to all Lufthansa flights, regardless of departure or arrival location.

Understanding the intricacies of air travel regulations can be challenging on its own. When you add the responsibility of transporting a loved one’s cremated remains, the situation becomes even more complex. To simplify this journey, we reached out to Lufthansa and examined their online policies concerning the transportation of human ashes.

Lufthansa’s Official Guidelines for Carrying Ashes in Carry-On

Lufthansa has provided a clear-cut answer: Passengers are permitted to carry cremated remains in their carry-on luggage. This isn’t a simple ‘pack-and-go’ situation, though. You’ll need to present a certificate of death and cremation along with a sticker stating that the remains are not classified as “dangerous goods.”

International Travel with Ashes: Lufthansa’s Advice

If you’re flying to another country, it’s crucial to consult the embassy of the destination country to confirm their regulations regarding the transport of human ashes. This will help you avoid any complications upon arrival.

A Crucial Point: Non-Metallic Urn

Lufthansa strongly recommends using a non-metallic urn that can be easily scanned by customs. This ensures a smoother passage through security checks.

Lufthansa’s Carry-On Baggage Allowance for Ashes

It’s crucial to ensure that the urn or container holding the ashes, along with any additional items you’re bringing on board, adhere to the airline’s carry-on baggage specifications:

  • Economy Class: One item limited to 8 kg
  • Premium Economy Class: One item limited to 8 kg
  • Business Class: Two items, each limited to 8 kg
  • First Class: Two items, each limited to 8 kg

Each item must also fit within the maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Make sure to verify that your urn conforms to these guidelines.

How heavy is My URN?
When travelling with Lufthansa and carrying ashes, it's vital to be mindful of the total weight that includes both the ashes and the urn. Ashes generally weigh between 1.8kg and 4kg, and the urn can add an additional 1kg to 3kg. Therefore, the combined weight could range from a low of 2.8kg to a high of 7kg, with an estimated average weight of around 4.9kg. Alternatively, if you're seeking a lighter option, a scatter tube, which weighs just 0.35kg, could be a viable alternative.
What size is my URN?
As for the dimensions of the urn, they typically vary between 10 to 12 inches in height (25 to 30 cm) and have a diameter ranging from 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm). For precise measurements, it's advisable to either measure the urn personally, consult the vendor's specifications, or directly ask the crematorium if that's where you acquired the urn or container.
