Required Documentation for Carrying Ashes on KLM Flights: You are required to present both the cremation certificate and the death certificate during security checks.

Additional Documentation May Be Required: Depending on the destination country, specific documentation might be needed. Please refer to the details further down the page.

Urn Type: The urn cannot be made of ‘some types’ of metal – must be X-rayable which is the main thing. Materials like wood are acceptable.

The urn must be sealed and wrapped discreetly so other passengers are unable to identify it as an urn.

Size/Weight Requirements: If you are carrying the urn as hand luggage, it must not exceed 55 x 25 x 35 cm (21.5 x 10 x 13.5 inches).

Ashes and urns together can weigh anywhere from 2.8kg to 7kg.

Cabin or Hold: You may carry an urn with ashes as either hand luggage or checked baggage.

However, due to the sensitive nature of the contents and KLM’s lack of coverage for damages, it is highly recommended that you opt for hand luggage.

(During our conversation with KLM, they also emphasised using hand luggage)

Pre-Travel Notice: There are no clear rules about notifying the airline before traveling with ashes, but it is always best to inform them in advance to avoid any issues.
