The Cremation Process (Prior Repatriation)
Before the Cremation Process Begins
To proceed with cremation, you will need the following documents in the UK:
- The ‘Green Certificate’: This is the primary document issued to the family when the death is registered.
- Application for Cremation (Form Cremation 1): Completed by the applicant.
- Cremation Form 4: A medical certificate completed by the treating doctor.
- Cremation Form 6: If a coroner is involved in the case, they will issue this form.
The rules in Ireland are similar.

Process Time
Cremation waiting times usually range from 10 to 13 days, though increased demand at crematoriums can extend this to up to three weeks. This duration is comparable to the typical waiting time for a burial.
Types of Cremation
While there are various cremation options, the two main types are as follows:
Unattended Cremation
This is the simplest and most cost-effective option, where the body is cremated without a service or visitation. It is also referred to as direct cremation.
We recommend this option for repatriation as it is the most cost-effective choice.
Attended Cremation
This option combines cremation with a traditional funeral service, often including visitation or a viewing.
Preparing the Body for Cremation
Preparing the Body
The international funeral director will prepare the body by removing hazardous items like pacemakers, glass, or battery-operated devices (e.g., watches or phones) to prevent explosions during cremation.
Preparing the Coffin
Coffins are typically used for cremation to protect the body, ensure easy handling, and provide additional fuel for the process. If a coffin is not used, a shroud with a flat board is necessary to safely and respectfully place the body in the cremation chamber.
The Cremation
Cremation is a straightforward procedure that uses intense heat, typically between 870°C and 980°C, to transform the remains into ashes. This takes place at a crematorium in a specialized machine called a cremator.
The cremation takes around 90 minutes, though certain medical conditions or medications can affect the duration.
After the Cremation
Verifying the Identity of the Ashes
Crematoriums follow strict protocols, using identity cards, QR codes, and other methods to ensure the correct ashes are returned. Tracking the process from coffin acceptance to ashes labeling.
Cardboard Container
Ashes are normally placed into a temporary plastic or cardboard container provided by the crematorium ready for collection.
Collecting the Ashes
We usually collect the ashes within one to two days after cremation, depending on the crematorium’s schedule. Our efficient service ensures there are no delays in the repatriation process.
